World Mission
|
 |
We have come to recognise that being involved in mission overseas is as much about receiving as giving. Although actively supporting a variety of organisations and individuals around the world, we have especially close and exciting connections in Uganda and Brazil as well as with BMS World Mission.
Uganda
Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, well known for its natural beauty and wildlife. Through regular visits, prayer and contact we have fostered special relationships with schools, churches and individuals. Below is photo of our team that last visited Uganda in March 2008 and helped with the below mentioned projects.
Kiswa Community Children’s Centre (KCCC)
We are spearheading local Baptist Association support for Kiswa Community Children’s Centre (KCCC) in Kampala, Uganda. Serving a large urban slum, the centre set up by the local Baptist church provides schooling with two cooked meals a day, access to Child Development and Family Liaison Officers, weekly access to local medics, vocational training for older youths, home visits and regular pastoral contact for more than 200 children.
If you wish to sponsor a child at the Kiswa Community Children’s Centre (KCCC), please visit the Giving section of our website.

Atirir Community Centre and Bible School
In a trading centre on a mud road north of the town of Soroti in north-eastern Uganda is a community centre and bible school. Canterbury Baptist Church teams have been involved in building work and teaching at the centre, which we hope will become a key base for activities and training for the benefit the surrounding village communities.

Atirir Pastor Support
In partnership with African Pastors’ Fellowship, we support Baptist pastors and their families in rural north-eastern Uganda. Through pastor sponsorship schemes, members help Ugandan pastors access theological training and equip them and their families as they serve their local communities.
School Connect
School Connect is a UK registered charity that has grown out of our contacts in Uganda. School Connect helps Kent primary schools set up long-term partnerships with rural schools in north-eastern Uganda. Whilst providing innovative teaching resources, raising awareness and facilitating the school links, the partnerships can be a spring-board for appropriate development to help children overcome the effects of poverty and war in Uganda.
Brazil
Brazil is the largest country in South America, 16 times the size of France. Besides sending church teams, we support a member of our congregation, Julia Stanbrook, who is working there with BMS World Mission.
BMS World Mission - Julia Stanbrook
 |
A member of our church, Julia Stanbrook – a primary school teacher – arrived in Brazil at the end of July 2007 to help with local mission work. She initially studied Portuguese in Fortaleza and learnt about Brazilian culture, both inside and outside the churches. In 2008 she moved to the Amazonian region of north Brazil to establish a pre-school education programme (PEPE) in the poor and marginalised communities in that part of the country.
To read Julia's Prayer Letter, including those of various other BMS overseas workers, please visit the following BMS website.

Multi-Country
The majority of our international support and outreach beyond Uganda and Brazil is channelled through BMS World Mission, an international Christian mission and development organisation.
BMS World Mission
We financially support the work of BMS World Mission, working in around 40 countries on four continents. BMS believes in holistic mission, an approach that stays true to the Christian call to evangelisation without neglecting the duty to take care of the physical needs of the poor.

BMS Birthday Scheme
One way in which we support BMS World Mission is through the BMS Birthday Scheme. On a church member's birthday, he/she receives a BMS birthday card from Joan Fischer, our Canterbury Baptist Church 'BMS Birthday Scheme Secretary', along with a gift envelope which the recipient can use to make a donation. If completed, the gift envelope is then sent back to Joan, and once a month, or whenever is suitable, all the donations are forwarded to BMS. If you wish to get involved, please Contact Us and let Joan have your name and birthday.
The Birthday Scheme primarily supports the health & medical work of BMS and partner organisations across the world, as detailed on the following BMS Birthday Scheme website. BMS is at the cutting edge of world mission and endeavours to alleviate suffering, improve the quality of life and to present the message of Jesus where it is currently unknown.
